Harnett and Cumberland Counties have both applied for funding to open special courts for military veterans. Cumberland, home to 10,900 veterans has been trying to establish a veterans court for the past four years and submitted a federal grant that was denied. Cumberland County has once again applied for a federal grant and expects to hear within the next month whether the grant is approved. Harnett County, which neighbors Cumberland, has applied for a state grant to fund their veterans court. The new veterans courts aim to help former servicemembers return to a productive life instead of locking them up for minor offenses that are often related to mental health problems or drug or alcohol abuse.
